Chaff consists of small radar-reflective elements released into the air. The resulting radar returns are intended to complicate tracking of the aircraft. Its defensive effect comes from reflecting radar energy.
The cartridge supplies the energy for the dispensing action. After release, the chaff interacts with radar signals in the surrounding environment. The actuation device and the radar countermeasure therefore perform distinct functions.
Valor manufactures the BBU-48A/B within its countermeasure-cartridge portfolio. The terms “impulse cartridge” and “squib” describe this device; BBU-48A/B identifies the specific product.
