Initiators, Squibs & EEDs

Small energetic devices that start a specified function or provide the energy to operate a mechanism.

Inside the capability

What are initiators, squibs and EEDs?

An initiator starts an energetic event within a larger assembly. A squib is a small pyrotechnic device used for initiation or actuation. An electro-explosive device (EED) uses an electrical input to begin an energetic reaction. Electrically activated initiators and squibs fall within this broader device family.

Valor Tactical manufactures missile initiators, squibs and EEDs for defense applications. These capabilities complement its impulse cartridges and cartridge-actuated and propellant-actuated devices (CAD/PAD).

What are initiation and actuation?

Initiation starts a specified function. Actuation is the movement or operation of a mechanism. An energetic device can provide the energy for that action, with its role defined by the assembly it serves.

In aircraft countermeasure equipment, for example, a cartridge supplies the energy for dispensing. The deployed chaff or flare then performs the protective function.

Can a squib also be an impulse cartridge?

The terms used for a device can describe different aspects of the same product. Valor’s BBU-48A/B is an impulse cartridge, also described as a squib, used for chaff dispenser actuation. Its product designation identifies the specific item within these wider categories.

Valor also supports custom initiator, squib and EED manufacturing for defined program requirements.
