An impulse cartridge is an energetic device that produces a brief output to operate a mechanism. In aircraft countermeasure equipment, that output powers the release of a chaff or flare payload.
Valor Tactical manufactures CCU and BBU impulse cartridges for airborne countermeasure equipment, including cartridges for chaff dispenser actuation, flare deployment and chaff-and-flare dispensing applications.
How does an impulse cartridge release a countermeasure?
The cartridge supplies energy for the physical dispensing event. Once released, the countermeasure performs its intended protective function outside the aircraft.
Chaff creates radar reflections intended to interfere with tracking. Defensive flares emit infrared energy intended to divert a heat-seeking threat. Their effects differ, while the cartridge’s role remains the release of the countermeasure.

Which impulse cartridges does Valor make?
Valor’s impulse cartridge portfolio includes:
- CCU-136A/A: Airborne countermeasure actuation
- CCU-145/A: Chaff and flare dispensing
- BBU-36/B: Flare deployment
- BBU-48A/B: Chaff dispenser actuation
What does the cartridge designation mean?
An impulse-cartridge designation identifies a particular product within a broad device family. The equipment it serves determines the required fit, connections and function. A shared category name alone does not describe those requirements.
Valor’s manufacturing scope includes established cartridge designs and custom configurations for program-specific needs. Related capabilities include CAD/PAD, initiators and energetic components.
